How to Tablet Weave a Ram’s Horn Pattern
This class is a two-part class and will focus on warping for and weaving the double ram’s horn pattern. It is recommended that students have at least made an attempt at tablet weaving. The first day of class will concentrate on how to read a pattern and then time will be spent loading your tablets using “S” and “Z” twist and (if using one) warping your loom. We will also learn how to create two packs that allow the use of different turning patterns to create the desired design. The second class will consist of the actual weaving process. The pattern will be provided. Students need to bring the following: A loom of some kind. An inkle loom is the type most often used, but if you don’t have one, a back strap loom is possible. 22 each, square cards measuring no smaller than 2”, with holes in each of the four corners; a small belt or stick shuttle for the weft thread, scissors, 4 balls or cones of size #5 (no smaller than size #8 or larger than size #3 makes a trim slightly wider than an inch but can be used for belts) crochet thread; 1 ball of a light, 1 ball of a medium and 2 balls of the same dark color. 100% mercerized cotton, 3 ply, Machine washable. (As usual in the thread crochet tradition, bigger size numbers mean finer thread; who thought of that?) At least 150 yards or more of each (double for the dark color for the weft thread.) Graph paper, colored pencils are optional and will be used to chart out another pattern, time permitting. Ages 16 & up welcome. Donations for Xerox welcome.
